The first fic that got me on fanfiction was one by Cinnamint Kitty called Now or Never. And it was about Bella's daughter (Hope Cullen) looking for her Father- Edward. It takes place after he leaves Bella in new moon and he never came back. But the fic that I absolutely adore is Emancipation Proclamation by kharizzmatik I look forward to the updates and is so well written I could rant on about it for ages

The classics for me are things like 'Boycotts and Barflies' (obviously), 'Stitches and Scars' and 'Blue Moon Over Manka's' (which was one of the first fics I read). They've got to be things that everyone's read, and especially the first and last of these three inspired whole new genres of writing. 'Blue Moon' is the canon that S.M. missed out of the book, it's that good, and there have been so many copies of 'Boycotts' that it's just ridiculous. They may seem to be of a common theme now, but they were pioneers at the time, trail blazers. Thus, classics.

The Submissive/The Dominant by Tara Sue Me are what I consider classic fanfic.

Things that started trends are were very popular when Twilight fanfic started growing.

The most classic is probably Boycotts and Barflies by vjgm. It basically started the All Human trend.
THE TEENAGE ANGST BRIGADE by jandco started more high school controversial fics.
Post-eclipse fics like Waiting for Dawn by alice laughed and first light by blondie.
This is more recent but Wide Awake by Angstgoddes003 really made the darker past trend popular.

Definitely Boycotts and BarFlies by vjgm. It isn't the first fic I ever read but it was the first fic I ever remember getting into. It got me into the AH universe and really opened up my horizons.
I could read it over and over.

The first fic I read, which I also consider to be a classic, was Blue Moon over Manka's. My only hesitation in mentioning it as a classic is that it isn't finished and hasn't been updated in 10 months.

Passion Fish, Boycotts & Barflies, Let Your Light Shine/A Life Extraordinary and The Submissive all stick in my head as classics as well, and stories that I could talk about ad infinitum. I tend to classify those as "classics" simply because they are popular in the fandom, but the debate over what makes a fic a classic is an interesting one. Should it be based on popularity, quality, or some combination of both? Certainly poor-quality fics sometimes become popular.. does that make them classics?

I started reading fan fiction on Twilighted. I started with the top 10 and the most read. Your podcast introduced me to the classics. I cannot remember the first fic I read. I have noticed the best written and/or popular fics have the most controversy. For Example, Wide Awake...Frenamies...Black and White. I read Teenage Angst Brigade recently. It has a classic feel to it.

Tough question. To me a classic is something that can stand alone, away from the original books, if the names were changed. That, and the re-read-ability factor.

I haven't been around that long to read much. My first Twi-fic was Wide Awake which (kinda) ruined me for all other fics because, for me, it's the best thing out there. I re-read it a lot. Other stories that come to mind: A World Without Sound, Apples and Oranges (now on LJ) & Bella Swan: Kidnapper (thanks for the rec btw). I've reread them so many times, I can quote them and I recommend them to every Twihard I know.

AH: B&B, TTAB, and Wide Awake. I consider them classics because I think that they are the ones that made OOC characterizations popular, so they kind of define that genre.

Canon and AU: Seducing Ms. Swan and Creature of Habit. I think these are some of the first ones people come accross when they start reading AU. They're the kind of thing that you're either reading or know you should be.

Spiral Static (and Citizen Erased). This was my first fic. Like many others, I didn't like BD and joined the fandom to look for an alternative. This is what I found and it's still one of my favorites. I know it's the same for a lot of people, esp on LJ.

Canon: any of Blondie's fics.

Classic fics to me are Let Your Light Shine, by LolaShoes, Wide Awake, When Darkness Turns to Light by Janna Banana (I know it is JxB, but it basically defined the genre).

I think there needs to be two categories of fiction, classic and cult classic. Classic, just as in books and films, is indisputably well-written, has a significant impact on its genre, but is not necessarily popular. Cult classic does not have to be anywhere near well-written, but it does have to have a strong following. This may just be making things more complicated, but I think it’s actually easier to define a story this way.

Okay my "classic" would be Wide Awake by AngstGoddess003. She introduced me to Darkward (we're best of friends now, thank-you) and now I can't stop writing/reading/reviewing AU/AH fic that are about Darkward. Even after reading most of it a year ago, I still compare every fic I read to it.

Classic's should have different categories.
One should be a smutty classic.
Darkward classic.
AH classic
Non-cannon classic
Cannon classic
Slash classic
Au Classic
so on...

Boycotts and Barflies introduced AH OOC rom com fics. Rite of Passage and The Way Back from Caracol introduced AH OOC angst fics. Wide Awake introduced more AH OOC darker angst fics where Edward is almost an anti-hero. These three stories basically define AH fanfics, and everything after them have been derivative of these three basically.

The fanfic that introduced me to the fandom was The Search for Myself: Edward & Bella. But ones I would consider a classic would be Wide Awake, Teenage Angst Brigade, and Boycotts and Barflies.

Hello, I'd like to throw my opinion in and say that "what happened to the original fics that brought together our fandom?" I guess for me the pinnacle fic is "Sacrifices" by Enthralled. I send all new fanficcers there. I really believe that this is the first really good fanfic. Nowadays we have hundreds of go to authors that will always write classic stories that we are guaranteed to love, but back in the day there was Enthralled and Alicelaughed. Thats it. So anyway, I could pontificate on this point for hours and I don't think this is the place so I'll just throw my hat in and say..."Sacrifices" go read it. Thanks

I started big, with Wide Awake. Then I think I made my way oer to Twilighted and made my way through the top 10's, but the first Twilighted fanfic that really grabbed me was Frenemies.

After I'd been reading Twi-FF for about six months or so when I found this site and proceeded to read all of these stories (several of which have been take off). Anyway, I consider almost all of these, plus of course 'Foundations' the 'classic' Twi-FF stories. (http://thedenalicoven.tripod.com/id17.html). Later I found the now-defunct Twilight awards. These are where the first 'classics' were annointed (in my opinion ;) ).

These stories were way before WA, HOFY, even Realize. I almost think there is a pre-2008, 1st half of 2008, 2nd half of 2008, and 1st half 2009. These don't seem like long time frames but the changes between a typical 2007 story and a typical first half 2009 story is incredible. The changes in trends is incredible also. Remember when only human stories were hip or remember when hitting 1000K reviews was rare.

Its been quite a ride!
